Math Acceleration Criteria
All students who will be entering grades 6-8 are monitored for potential acceleration in mathematics instruction. This happens annually, based upon formal and informal measures including classroom performance and district benchmark tests: more detailed criteria is listed below. Families of students who are newly eligible for acceleration are notified prior to the end of the current school year.
Acceleration has a future impact on available math courses when the student reaches high school; for this reason, the decision to accelerate is made by a group of people, including OMS administration and math teachers, as well as district curriculum staff.
Math acceleration criteria
The criteria used to make acceleration decisions is listed below, broken down by the student’s current grade. The criteria are predominantly based upon the Wisconsin State Standards as well as those behaviors that define students who are typically successful in advanced coursework.
